Monthly Musicianship: February = Perfect 4th

February is the LOVE month, and the PERFECT month for the interval of a PERFECT 4TH!


Sample songs for an ASCENDING PERFECT 4TH are The Bridal Chorus (Here Comes the Bride) from Richard Wagner's opera Lohengrin, and O Tannenbaum (or O Christmas Tree).

February is PERFECT 4TH month! Some reminders:

  1. INTERVALS are the Building Blocks of MUSIC.

  2. HALF-STEPS (or semi-tones) are the Building Blocks of INTERVALS.

  3. The QUALITY of an interval can be either Major, Minor, Perfect, Augmented, or Diminished.

  4. MAJOR or MINOR intervals are 2nd, 3rd, 6th, and 7th.

  5. PERFECT, AUGMENTED, or DIMINISHTED intervals are Unison, 4th, 5th, and 8ve.

  6. A MINOR interval is ½ step smaller than a MAJOR interval (2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th).

  7. A DIMINISHED interval is ½ step smaller than a PERFECT interval (Unison, 4th, 5th, 8ve).

  8. An AUGMENTED interval is ½ step larger than a PERFECT interval (Unison, 4th, 5th, 8ve).
